Chapter Eighteen
Dean
Things had been going so well; all of my plans were laid out carefully, and I let Jane take the lead. Sheâs the one who made the first move. Iâm as angry as I am confused. I didnât plan for that to happen. I thought about it, but I wasnât going to act on it. Jane told me it was getting late and she had to go thank me for a lovely evening. She turned, opened the door and stopped as if a thought came to her. Then she was on me, wrapping her arms around me and kissing me.
I go to Janeâs flat, punch the buzzer and wait. I glare at the noisy neighbour who's watching me, my hands clenched into fists. She lowers her head and pretends to be sweeping her bloody step. The door opens and Jane appears in black again. I look at her up and down. I know what this is; the black is an armour, a barrier, a means of protection. Isnât it a bit too late for that, Jane? When she had been in my bed so willingly a few hours before? The hypocrisy. So sheâs back as the grieving widow, but it wonât erase what has happened. I bet she came down herself to avoid having me in her flat to be on the safe side. She starts making all sort of excuses.
âI wasnât thinking straight,â she says. âIâm not ready to take that step.â
âWhat?â I ask.
âI didnât think a guy like you would be interested in me and last night, well... I got ahead of myself and... I realised Iâm not ready.â
âWait, are you telling me that I should go for women based on my looks? Thatâs such bullshit. I like you and... proved it.â
âYes, I know... I need more time.â
âFine, suit yourself,â I say and walk away from her.
Theodore is displeased with me for some unknown reason. What I could possibly have done wrong to make him behave this way? When I try to pat him, he growls, with his tail low, and leaves the room or hides. Honestly, I do think this cat knows everything. Like he can read me. Knows who I am.
A few days later, he stops with his strange behaviour. I watch him studying a fly, his eyes never leaving its prey. He jumps and his sharp claws go to it with deadly precision. He lands on the floor, elegant and graceful even as he hunts. He moves the dead fly with his paw, making sure itâs dead, perhaps? His innocent eyes go up to mine.
âGood boy,â I say to him and hand out a treat as a reward.
Weâre two beautiful predators, him and I, so alike in so many ways. We take our time to catch our prey. We study it carefully before we go for the kill.
Iâll make Hollieâs wish come true and meet her in public.
